If you have walked past our windows in downtown San Mateo and wondered what is actually going on inside, this guide is for you. Maybe you have never played a claw machine before. Maybe you played them as a kid and assumed they were all rigged. Either way, here is exactly what to expect when you walk through our doors for the first time.

Short version: no tokens, no pressure. Just a room full of claw machines and skill games stocked with prizes people actually want, and a way to play that takes about a minute to learn.

No Tokens

The first thing people notice is what is missing: there are no coin slots and no token machines. There are two ways to play. The easiest is the free Clawesome app. Download it on iPhone or Android, create an account, buy credits, and then tap your phone on any machine to play.

Prefer to keep your phone in your pocket? We also offer game cards right at the arcade. Load one up with credits and tap it on any machine, same as the phone. They are great for kids, groups, or anyone who just wants to walk in and start playing.

Your first credit purchase in the app comes with 10 free bonus credits, so your first visit stretches a little further. The app also tracks your wins, XP, and progress automatically, and the points you earn just by playing can be redeemed for prizes. Every grab counts for something, even the misses. No punch cards, no tickets to count.

If you get stuck on anything, just ask. We are a small team and someone is always around to help you get set up. You can also find answers on our help page.

Prizes Worth Playing For

This is where we are pickiest. Our machines are stocked with plushies, keychains, vinyl figures, and collectibles from Pop Mart, Sanrio, Pokemon, and more. Miffy, Hello Kitty, blind boxes, the characters people actually hunt for. Not the mystery carnival plush you leave in the car.

The lineup rotates weekly, so regulars always have something new to chase. You can preview what is currently in the machines on our prizes page before you come in.

Tips for Your First Grab

A few things we tell every first-timer. Walk the room before you play. Every machine is stocked differently, and some prizes are sitting in better positions than others. Look for a prize near the chute or resting loosely on top of the pile.

Then there is the double tap, the trick we teach every first-timer. Instead of letting the claw drop all the way to the bottom, tap the button a second time to close it early. When a prize is sitting high on the pile, closing the claw at the right height is the difference between grabbing it clean and pushing it deeper. It takes a few tries to get the timing down, and that is exactly the fun of it.

Take your time lining up. There is no countdown pressure culture here, and checking the claw position from the side of the machine before you drop makes a real difference. And do not get discouraged by a miss. Sometimes the first grab repositions a prize perfectly for the next one. Half the fun is the near misses and the cheering that comes with them.

Not Just Claw Machines

Claws are the heart of the arcade, but they are not the whole story. Try Stop Time, where you stop the timer at exactly 10 seconds to win, the Scissor Cutter, where one clean snip is all that stands between you and the prize, or Brick Stacker, where a steady hand builds your way to the top. We also have a Photobooth for capturing the moment, plus many more games spread around the room.

Each one rewards a slightly different skill, so if the claw is not cooperating, switch it up. Some of our best winners barely touch the claws at all.

More Than Just Grabbing

Play through the app and every grab adds up to something. We run tournaments and keep live leaderboards, so if you have a competitive streak there is always a ranking to climb. Some of our regulars come in with a strategy. Others just come to unwind after dinner. Both are doing it right.

The vibe we aim for is the one that inspired us in Japan: couples on dates, groups of friends, families with kids, and solo players all sharing the same room, laughing at misses and celebrating wins. It is entertainment that does not revolve around drinking or a big night out. You just show up and play.

Bringing a Group?

The arcade can be reserved for birthday parties with all-inclusive packages that cover play, prizes, and space for your group. And if you want the claw machines to come to you, we rent machines for weddings, corporate events, and festivals throughout the Bay Area.

Plan Your Visit

That is really all there is to it. Come by 35 East 4th Ave, download the app or grab a game card, tap a machine, and see what you can pull. Whether you leave with a Jumbo Pokemon or just a story about the one that got away, we think you will be back.
